Fungarth Hill

Forests & Woodlands

Fungarth Hill lies on the outskirts of Dunkeld and the track between the two once formed part of an old public highway.

The lower slopes of Fungarth Hill on the outskirts of Dunkeld are home to an area of juniper trees, one of the three native Scottish conifers and now relatively uncommon in Scotland. Juniper is naturally slow growing and does not regenerate easily, being under constant grazing attack from rabbits, deer and sheep. Juniper berries are used to produce gin and, in days gone by, it was renowned for its medicinal properties.

The area around Fungarth Hill, between Dunkeld and the Loch of the Lowes nature reserve, is now a popular walking route and during May, the woodland floor on the hill’s slopes is covered with bluebells. There are beautiful views across the loch and beyond and while it not readily accessible from the roadside, there is an excellent Scottish Wildlife Trust Visitor Centre with observation hides close by. The centre is well signposted off the walking route. Loch of the Lowes is home to breeding osprey and a vast array of wildfowl and woodland birds.

The circular Fungarth Hill Walk forms part of the Dunkeld and Birnam Path network, with more information available from Dunkeld Visitor Information Centre.
