Glenfinnan is a small beautiful village sitting comfortably among the hills of Glen Finnan within a lovely valley.
Scattered along the main road, the settlement is situated at the head of Loch Shiel which stretches south west for 20 miles to Acharacle.
The village has become world-renowned for several events. Firstly, the story of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s flight for the British throne gathered momentum at Glenfinnan where he raised the Jacobite standard and rallied his clansmen for battle. This event has made this place almost a hallowed ground for many Scots because of the historic associations with the Jacobite cause.
The second icon is the famous Glenfinnan viaduct which carries the railway to Glenfinnan Station across a 1,000 ft span, 100 ft above the ground. The Jacobite steam engine train runs from here to Fort William and Mallaig in summer months with regular trains available the rest of the year.
The filming of the second and third Harry Potter books, Harry Potter and the Chambers of Secret and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban took place in September 2001 and in 2003/2004 with the Hogwarts Express calling at Glenfinnan.
Glenfinnan attracts many thousands of visitors from around the world to experience the stunning scenery but also the special atmosphere. In August every year, on the Saturday closest to 19 August, the Glenfinnan Gathering and Games take place.
