Lochalsh Area

Overview

Kyle of Lochalsh is an important transit point for tourists, locals and services on the way to the Isle of Skye. Lochalsh has many sights to warrant a stop in its own right.

Of much more interest to most visitors is nearby Eilean Donan Castle, one of Scotland's most famous and popular sights, perched at the end of a stone causeway on the shores of Loch Duich. It's not hard, however, to step off the tourist trail, with the Glenelg peninsula on the south side of Loch Duich testimony to how quickly the west coast can seem remote and undiscovered. A few miles north of Kyle of Lochalsh, the delightful village of Plockton is a refreshing alternative to its utilitarian neighbour, with cottages grouped around a yacht-filled bay and Highland cattle wandering the streets. Plockton lies on the southern shore of Loch Carron, a long inlet which, together with Strathcarron at the head of the loch, acts as a dividing line between the Kyle of Lochalsh district and the scenic splendours of Wester Ross to the north.
