Lochmaben

Overview

The Royal Burgh of Lochmaben lies in the valley of the River Annan, eight miles east of Dumfries.

As the name suggests there are three small lochs edging the town - Kirk Loch, Castle Loch and Mill Loch - all which provide great opportunities to enjoy sailing and fishing. Coarse fishing is available on all three lochs, either free or at modest cost.

The town is also a good centre for walkers, with eight miles of scenic paths around the town. For cyclists, there is a large network of quiet minor roads linking Lochmaben to adjoining towns and villages, and the town is close to the popular Seven Stanes mountain bike centres at Ae forest and Mabie forest.

The burgh has a long and interesting recorded history dating back to the time of 13th century. Lochmaben Castle was the home of Robert the Bruce when he was Lord of Annandale and his statue now stands in front of the town hall. Lochmaben was also the birthplace of William Paterson (1658 - 1719), the co-founder of the Bank of England.
