Towns & Villages

Longhope is an important coastal settlement located on the island of South Walls which is one of the Orkney Islands off the northern coast of Scotland.

Longhope has a rich maritime history dating back to the Napoleonic Wars when it was a rendezvous point for Baltic convoys. During the First World Wars the settlement became the headquarters of the Scapa Flow Navel Base, home of the British Grand Fleet. Today the island South Walls is connected to Hoy by the Ayre causeway making the second largest island in the Orkney Archipelago. Longhope is the largest settlement on these two islands.
