Newcastleton forest is situated in the valley of Liddesdale, next to the border with England.
Located near the cyclist-friendly village of Newcastleton, this forest is part of the 7stanes network of mountain bike trails. Whether you're exploring on foot, on horse or by bike, you'll find something to enjoy in the forest.
This area is steeped in the history of the Reivers and cross-border raiding. Now an important area for timber production, much of this area was once wild open moorland. The remains of small huts or shielings that were used when the cattle and sheep were brought up for summer grazing can still be seen. As you travel through the forest, you will see evidence of the past all around you, from Iron Age settlements and 5000 year old long cairns, to beautifully constructed circular sheep stells.
