Perth Area

Overview

Pretty rural countryside surrounds the small provincial city of Perth, former capital of Scotland.

Perth enjoys a charming position on the banks of the Tay. With a rich and influential history that stretches back over 8000 years, Perth has served as its country's capital and has always been one of the most important political, judicial and commercial centres in Scotland.

Not to be missed in the Perth area is Scone Palace (pronounced Scoon), where many of the Scottish kings were crowned on the Stone of Destiny. Robert the Bruce, Oliver Cromwell, John Knox and Bonnie Prince Charlie are just four of the famous historical figures who left their mark.

Today, Perth is a bustling town of around 50,000 inhabitants. It is renowned for its parks and gardens. Indeed the town has won numerous 'Britain in Bloom' awards including 'Champion of Champions' in 2000 and 'Best Large Town' in 2002.

Other stately places to visit include Elcho Castle, Huntingtower Castle, Megginch Castle at the Carse of Gowrie and last, but not least, Balhousie Castle, home to the Black Watch Museum.

Abernethy is home to an 11th century Round Tower and local history museum. Glenalmond is especially picturesque in spring and autumn, while nearby Pitcairngreen is a pretty hamlet with an English-style village green.
