Poolewe

Overview

Poolewe is a neat little village that lies on the sheltered south side of Loch Ewe, around the headland from Gairloch, in Wester Ross.

Poolewe lies at the mouth of the River Ewe as it rushes down across craggy moorland from Loch Maree. Half a mile across the bay from Poolewe are Inverewe Gardens, a verdant oasis of foliage and riotously colourful flower collections, which form a vivid contrast to the wild, heathery crags of the adjoining coast. The sub-tropical gardens were the brainchild of Osgood Mackenzie, who inherited the surrounding 12,000-acre estate from his stepfather, the laird of Gairloch, in 1862.
