The small fishing village of Portmahomack in Easter Ross is situated in on the Tain peninsula in Cromarty and boasts a delightful broad sandy beach.
The rockpools and natural barriers edge the low waters adding onto the idyllic location and make the village popular with leisure craft. With the hammer-shaped Tain peninsula to the north side and Dornoch Firth to the south, this pleasant resort is a green windswept village which sprawls downhill to a tidal harbour with wide views around the bay. Dolphin watching, fishing and watersports can all be experienced in Portmahomack.
The Tarbet Discovery Centre deals with the archaeology of the Picts in the area, and holds a large collection of fragments of Pictish stone sculptures, both original and replica examples. The lighthouse at Tarbat Ness is one of the highest in Britain.
