Towns & Villages

Rankinston is a small village on the B730, approximately 12 miles south east of Ayr.

Located in the Doon Valley, on a clear day Rankinston offers outstanding panoramic views that stretch north 20 miles over the towns of Ayr, Prestwick and Troon.

Previously a farming hamlet, Rankinston developed as a thriving mining community in the 19th century, built to allow the coal miners that worked in the local pits to have housing close to their work. The last mine in the area, Littlemill, closed in 1974.

Rankinston boasts easy access to many forest walks, which are home to a diverse range of wildlife. Although small, the village has a shop, post office and community centre.
