River Devon

Rivers and Canals

Running through Clackmannanshire and Perthshire, the River Devon takes in picturesque villages and towns including Rumbling Bridge, Dollar, Tillacoutry and Alloa.

The River Devon originates from high in the Ochil Hills and flows down towards narrow ravines and forests to meet the River Forth.

The waters were used to power textile mills during the 18th and 19th centuries, which led to the development of mill towns along the Devon Valley.

The River Devon is also celebrated in the last song Robert Burns ever wrote -

“How pleasant the banks of the clear winding Devon, with green spreading bushes and flow’rs blooming fair!” Robert Burns, 1787.
