Rounall Wood

Overview

Nestled on the outskirts of Dalbeattie, Rounall Wood is one of the town's hidden gems.

If you are looking for a quiet place to walk your dog or somewhere for the children to explore, Rounall Wood is the ideal spot. There is a circular walk lasting approximately one hour that is suitable for most walking abilities; it is recommended to do the walk in a clockwise direction. Although there are some steeper gradients the route is also suitable for accompanied and more able wheelchair users.

Built on the site of a former granite quarry, the quarry owner gifted the wood to the towns peo+F27ple I 1922. A new pleasure park was proposed and the improvement works were undertaken during the decades that followed with pretty ornamental shrubs been planted among the rocky outcrops and the construction of a beautiful formal rose garden.
More recently the formal park has been transformed into a more natural woodland where you are almost guaranteed to spot the local wildlife which abounds here including roe deer, badgers and buzzards as well as bats, such as pipistrelle and brown long-eared varieties. The best time to spot the bats is on fine summer evenings when they can be seen silhouetted against the dimming sky.
