Rutherglen lies on the south-eastern fringes of Glasgow and is the oldest Royal Burgh in Scotland.
Rutherglen was granted a Royal Charter by King David I in 1126. In more recent times it grew as a town and became a centre for heavy industry. Rutherglen Shopping Centre features a daily market while the town hall was refurbished recently. At Farme Cross a series of standing stones commemorates the old Royal Burgh’s boundary stones. Shawfield Stadium is home to greyhound racing.
