Dominated by sand dunes and unspoilt beaches, Sanday is the largest of the northerly Orkney Isles.
The appropriately-named Sanday is mostly made up sand dunes, which gives it some brilliant beaches - fine sweeps of white sand and clear blue sea. All this sand is good for the soil, which is very fertile, and so the way of life for most islanders is an agricultural one. The island is an archaeology hotspot, with numerous sites of interests including cairns, brochs and burial mounds.
The island has a distinctive lighthouse which was designed and built by Thomas Smith, assisted by Robert Stevenson, over 200 years ago. Visitors to the island will also discover an abundance of sea birds, seals and other wildlife.
Lady Village and Kettletoft are the two main population centres of the island. There is a range of accommodation on the island that caters for long and short stays, bed and breakfast or self-catering.
