Stuchd An Lochain & Meall Buidhe Range

Stuchd An Lochain & Meall Buidhe Range is two Munros in upper Glen Lyon in Perthshrie, close to the remote Loch an Daimh.

This splendid area naturally falls within the Loch Rannoch and Glen Lyon National Scenic Area and has a real wilderness not found in many other parts of Perthshire.

Stuchd an Lochain translates as `peak of the small loch` and has a dramatic corrie and tiny glistening lochan known as Lochan nan Cat. The story goes that in 1590, the local laird, Mad Colin Campbell of Meggernie, climbed the hill and then chased a herd of goats over the corrie edge to their death in the lochan below.

Meall Buidhe is the `yellow hill` and, whilst lacking the obvious physical charms of its neighbour, a good day can be had climbing to the summit and taking in the superb views away to the north and east.

A fine group of beautiful old Scots pine are visible on the hillside close to Loch an Daimh and the area is rich in wildlife. Look out for red deer moving gracefully across the hilly terrain or bellowing in the October rut.

The best starting point is the impressive hydro-electric scheme dam beneath Loch an Daimh. The single track road ends beneath the dam and here you'll find ample parking spots. Walk up to reach the level of the loch and let the beauty and peace of upper Glen Lyon unfold.
