Ullapool

Overview

Ullapool, an appealing port and resort in Wester Ross, is north-west Scotland's principal centre of population.

The fishing port of Ullapool in Wester Ross comes alive in summer when it receives a large influx of holidaymakers. Many move on by ferry to Stornoway on Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, but it is a good base for exploring the area, and has a marvellous setting jutting out into Loch Broom.

Attractions include the award-winning Ullapool Museum and a multitude of craft shops and galleries.

To the west of Ullapool is the Inverpolly National Nature Reserve - a home to pine martens, wildcats, buzzards and golden eagles. Look out for the unique shape of Stac Pollaidh (sometimes written Stack Polly), one of the most photographed hills in this area.

South from Ullapool are attractions such as Leckmelm Shrubbery and Arboretum, Lael Forest Garden, and the dizzying depths of Corrieshalloch Gorge and the Falls of Measach. Along the road to Poolewe are great views out to sea over golden beaches and green, rocky islands, and famous Inverewe Garden, overlooking Loch Ewe.
