Wester Ross Area

Overview

Wester Ross is a spectacular Highland wilderness punctuated by dramatic mountain ranges, fjord-like sea lochs, and a succession of secluded coastal towns and villages.

Wester Ross stretches from Achiltibuie and the Coigach peninsula in the north to Lochcarron in the south. Throughout the area, there are sights and places that will stay with you forever.

Highlights include the magnificent sea lochs of Loch Broom and Little Loch Broom; the jagged ridge of An Teallach and the wild isolation of Fisherfield Forest; the breathtaking grandeur of Beinn Eighe, Liathach and the other Torridon mountains; stupendous Stac Pollaidh (Stac Polly) and, of course, the wonderful, nerve-jangling approach to Applecross over the Bealach na Ba.

It is this scenic splendour that has made Wester Ross one of the great wilderness destinations in Europe. For hillwalkers, climbers, wildlife enthusiasts and fishing fanatics, the area offers real adventure among awesome landscapes. Some of Britain's rarest animals and birds reside here, such as the wildcat, pine marten, sea eagle and Scotland's national bird, the golden eagle, so keep your eyes peeled. Whales, dolphins and porpoises can also be seen offshore.

There are also places to visit such as the Inverewe Garden, one of the most exotic woodland gardens in Europe, featuring Australian gum trees, Blue Nile lilies and Chinese rhododendrons. Rest your head in resorts such as Gairloch and Ullapool, or lay your blanket on the ground in awe-inspiring surroundings for an experience you'll never forget.
