Durness Smoo Youth Hostel (SYHA)

Smoo, Lairg, Sutherland, IV27 4QA

A true hostelling experience in simple but relaxed accommodation, surrounded by a wild and spectacular landscape.

From Durness Smoo Youth Hostel you can explore mountains, sea cliffs, beaches and waterfalls. On a clear night the starry skies are incredible, made even better if you are fortunate enough to see the Northern Lights. Durness provides a refuge from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and John Lennon himself holidayed here for many years.

The youth hostel is relaxed and friendly and provides a simple base from which to explore the area on a budget. There are both multi-shared and private rooms, a well-equipped self-catering kitchen, drying room and cosy lounge which is heated by a coal-burning stove.

Local attractions include the infamous Smoo Cave (which is situated next to the youth hostel) Cape Wrath, Handa Island and Balnakiel Craft Village (only a short distance away). Hill walkers will love Foinaven, Ben Hope, Ben Loyal and Cranstackie and for those wishing simply to relax Balnakiel Beach and Faraid Head are beautiful sandy beaches and large sand dunes to be explored.

Dogs are now welcome at Durness Smoo Youth Hostel, for a small fee, when guests book a private room. Please notify us in advance to ensure that a dog friendly room is allocated.
