Accommodation Requirements
Public Entrance
- A public entrance must be accessible to wheelchair users from a setting down or car parking point.
- Where an establishment has a car park, a reservable parking space should be available for a disabled guest, on request.
- The route from the parking point or space to the entrance must be sound and free from obstacles.
Deep gravel, cobbles and pot-holed surfaces are unlikely to be acceptable. - The entrance door must have a clear opening of not less that 67 cm.
- Where there is no ramp there must be no more than 3 steps to the entrance at any one point.
- Within the reception area, there must be an unobstructed space of not less than 110 x 70 cm.
Interior General
- Those public passageways that lead to the restaurant or dining room, lounge, TV lounge (unless TV is provided in the bedroom), bar, the disabled guest's bedroom and bathroom (if other than en suite) should not be less than 75 cm wide.
- Doors to the rooms referred to above should have a clear opening of not less than 67 cm.
- There must be no more than 3 steps, at any one point, in the corridors the disabled guest will be required to use or at the entrance of the rooms referred to above.
- Where the disabled guest may be required to use a lift, the door should have a clear opening of not less than 67 cm, and the interior of the lift should not be less than 110 cm deep by 70 cm wide.
Bathroom
- The bathroom must be en suite or on the same floor as the disabled guest's bedroom.
- Where a bath is provided, it should have a horizontal or angled support rail on the far side (recommended 25 cm above the rim).
- Where a shower only is provided, it must have a seat (recommended 45 - 50 cm above the floor) and a support rail on the far wall (recommended 25 cm above the top of the seat and a maximum of 50 cm from the centre of the seat).
- Where there is a step into the shower, it should have a riser of no more than 19 cm.
- There must be a washbasin within the bathroom or bedroom.
WC
- The WC must be en suite or on the same floor as the disabled guest's bedroom.
- Toilet paper must be within reach of the seat.
- Where the WC is separate from the bathroom there must be a washbasin in the same room.
Notes
- Ramps, where present, should not have a gradient at any point of more than 1:12.
- Steps to be used by a disabled guest should have risers no more than 19cm, with treads no less than 25 cm deep and 75 cm wide.
Visitor Attraction Requirements
Approach
- A public entrance must be accessible to wheelchair users from either a setting-down point or a car park. Any such setting-down point must have a firm, level surface regardless of whether or not there is a car park.
- Where the attraction has a car park but no setting-down point, 2 dedicated car parking spaces plus one for every 50 spaces up to a maximum of 20 dedicated spaces should be provided. Dedicated spaces should be as close as possible to the entrance and not more than 100 m from the entrance.
- All such dedicated spaces must be clearly signposted and marked using the international wheelchair symbol.
- The car park surface of the dedicated spaces and the route to the nearest public entrance must be firm, sound and free from obstacles. Rough grass, deep gravel, cobbles and pot-holed surfaces are not acceptable.
- The route to the nearest entrance from the dedicated parking spaces must have no more than 3 steps at any one point and no more than 3 per 50 m. Steps should have risers no more than 19cm, treads no less than 25 cm deep and 75cm wide. Where there are 2 or more steps, a handrail must be provided.
- Paths, where provided, must be not less than 75 cm wide and passing places not less than 150 x 150 cm must be provided at intervals of not less than 25 m.
- Slopes on the route must be no steeper than 1:12 at any one point and level resting places 150cm long must be provided at 10 m intervals on paths or slopes which exceed 15 m in length.
NB: Requirements marked '*' may be waived where regular shuttle transport plies between the car park and entrance, provided the transport has no more than 3 steps and is capable of carrying a folded wheelchair.
Entrance
- The immediate approach to the entrance must include no more than 3 steps.
- Thresholds must not exceed 5cm and must be adequately tapered if they exceed 2cm.
- Where a ramp is present it should be no steeper than 1:12 with level resting places 150 cm long at no more than 10 m intervals. NB: For internal ramps 1:12 is the preferred gradient except for ramps less than 1.5 m long, where 1:10 is accepted. Any such ramp must be of solid contruction and well maintained with a slip resistance surface.
- The entrance door or gate must have a clear opening of not less than 67 cm. If the normal entrance is via a turnstile or kissing gate, an alternative nearby entrance with a clear opening of no less than 67 cm must be available.
Facilities
Includes WCs, retails and bars. If an attraction includes one or more of each of these facilities, at least one of each must be accessible. The route to each accessible facility must:
- Have a firm, sound surface, free from obstacles.
- Contain no incline or ramp steeper than 1:12 except for internal ramps less than 1.5 m long where 1:10 is acceptable. Level resting places 150 cm long must be provided at no more than 10 m intervals on paths or slopes which exceed 15 m in length.
- Have no more than 3 steps at any point along the route or more than 3 steps in each 50 m.
- Have corridors or paths (where present) not less than 75 cm wide.
- Have no doors along the route with clear opening widths of less than 67 cm or clear approaches less than 110 cm deep.
- Have no more than 3 steps at the entrance. Where there are 2 or more steps a handrail must be provided.
- Where the route requires the use of a lift or lifts, their doors should have clear openings of not less than 67 cm and internal dimensions of not less than 110 cm deep by 70 cm wide.
Features
The displays, exhibits, rides etc within an attraction. The route to the feature must:
- Have a firm, sound surface, free from obstacles.
- Contain no incline or ramp steeper than 1:12 except for internal ramps less than 1.5 m long where 1:10 is acceptable. Level resting places 150 cm long must be provided at no more than 10 metre intervals on paths or slopes which exceed 15 m in length.
- Have no more than 3 steps at any point along the route or more than 3 steps in each 50 m.
- Have corridors of paths (where present) not less than 75 cm wide.
- Have no doors along the route or at the entrance with clear opening widths of less than 67 cm or clear approaches less than 110 cm deep.
