Kerrera Bunkhouse

Lower Gylen, Kerrera, Oban, Argyll, PA34 4SX

Welcome to Kerrera Bunkhouse! We are in a beautiful location on the south of the Isle of Kerrera, only a short hop from Oban but worlds apart in character. Whether alone or as part of a group, you can enjoy gorgeous views and island charm.

Set in a stunning location, less than 10 minutes walk from Gylen Castle on the south of the island, Kerrera Bunkhouse is the ideal location to get away from it all.  The Isle of Kerrera lies just a 5 minute ferry ride from Oban, yet it seems to take you back to a simpler time. There are no vehicles allowed on the island apart from the residents own, and the residents total less than 40 people. The island has a wealth of amazing geological formations that continue to attract geology students and academics from far and wide. There is also a bountiful array of natural wildlife to see and enjoy such as otters, wild goats, sea eagles, golden eagles, seals and dolphins.

Kerrera Bunkhouse itself is small and cosy, thoughtfully laid out and quirkily decorated. There are beds for 7 people, and a small sofa bed that can cater for 2 more. On the ground level, there are two sets of bunkbeds which are housed in separate compartments separated by the stairs, and using curtains these can be private spaces. Up on the mezzanine level are two single mattresses that can be joined together to become a superking bed and also a separate single space.

There is a galley kitchen with full cooking facilities: gas cooker, fridge with small freezer, microwave, pots, pans and crockery. All bed linen is provided.

There is a shower block and toilet adjoining the Bunkhouse.

While there is no TV, there are speakers provided that can be used with any phone/mp3 player. There is a selection of books and games available.

Should you wish,  it is possible to hire our Byre (old converted cowshed) for use in the evenings. This is a great space with a large dining table, cosy sofas and a woodburning stove. It's the ideal place for a group of friends to gather for a social evening. Standard charge is £25, which includes a basket of wood for the fire.

    Public Transport Directions

To get to Kerrera, you must first get to Oban, which is about 3 hours north of Glasgow (regular train services from Glasgow Queen Street).

The Kerrera Ferry is 1m south of Oban on the Gallanach Road. The ferry takes less than 5 mins and runs regularly until 6pm. Further info regarding the ferry service is available at

Once you arrive on the island, walk up the hill towards the old phone box and follow the path to the left. You have the option then to stick to the path on the left following the coast, which takes you past Horseshoe Bay and the Parrot Sanctuary. This walk will get you to Kerrera Tea Garden and Bunkhouse in about 50 minutes.

The alternative is to take the path on the left, up towards the old school house. This route leads you to the west side of Kerrera and allows you beautiful views out to Mull and Lismore. This walk takes about 2 hours.

However, it is possible by requestt for you (or just your luggage) to be collected at the ferry point. Please contact us in advance should you wish to make arrangements for this.
