Hop on your bike and explore the stunning scenery of Edinburgh & The Lothians. With miles upon miles of routes to choose, such as coastal trails, along old railway lines or quiet country roads, there are exciting routes just waiting to be explored.

Edinburgh is a very cycle friendly city with an extensive network of traffic-free routes, such as old railway lines, that weave their way through the city. Covering some 75 km of off-street cycling paths, the useful Innertube map shows the main routes across the city. At peak times, cyclists are allowed to share the buses' green lanes in and around the city centre which means you can keep moving.

Popular cycling routes in the city include the Union Canal Path, Water of Leith Walkway or Innocent Cycle Path - all easy routes with great scenery.

Midlothian is an excellent destination for a cycling adventure. A popular route starting from the picturesque village of Rosewell is the scenic Midlothian Country Circular. Set in the countryside to the south of Edinburgh this is a surprisingly rural route with only a few short sections on main roads. It makes for an excellent days cycling and there are lots of pubs, tearooms and attractions along the way.

West Lothian

West Lothian offers a great and varied selection of cycling routes. The Broxburn to East Calder route is perfect for a short ride at just over 14 miles long and it takes you along the peaceful Union Canal towpath and disused railway lines.

East Lothian

There are also many brilliant cycle routes across East Lothian such as the Beaches and Castles Cycle Route. This lovely circular trail begins in Longniddry before continuing along the quiet back roads of East Lothian. This one-day route can be stretched to a weekend trip to enjoy all the regions' attractions including beautiful beaches, the Hopetoun Monument and Tantallon Castle. The route can also be reached from the centre of the city along the Edinburgh to Longniddry Route.
