  • Golfers tee-off on the picturesque 18-hole course at Stromness on Orkney Mainland
    Stromness golf course, Mainland, Orkney

Tee off at one of Orkney’s golf courses and improve your game while taking in the stunning coastal backdrop. The islands are home to a number of 9 and 18-hole courses suited to all abilities, whether your handicap is 5 or 35.

Orkney has two 18-hole golf courses - Stromness and the Orkney Golf Club in Kirkwall which offer a great mix of links and parkland.

Stromness Golf Course is a seaside parkland course boasting unrivalled views across to the Hoy Sound and Scapa Flow. Its challenging 18 holes requires some tight angles, and for an unusual test of skill, try hitting your golf balls over wartime gun emplacements. The course is available for visitors wishing to play a round and during the summer solstice in June, why not experience the unique thrill of a round of midnight golf?

Visitors can also enjoy the 18 holes at Orkney Golf Club while taking in the views across the harbour and town of Kirkwall. They are welcomed at 'open' events which are held throughout the season.

For golfers who enjoy a shorter round, Orkney boasts a number of excellent 9-hole courses. South Ronaldsay Golf Course, which opened in 2005, is in the village of St Margaret's Hope and offers some of the most difficult par 4 holes in Orkney.

Or why not catch a ferry to Orkney's Northern Isles and enjoy a 9-hole round of golf at Westray, Sanday and North Ronaldsay?

Visiting golfers are welcomed on a turn up and play policy, however weekends and weekday evenings can be busy with member competitions. Check the golf club websites for more details and fixture lists.
