Scotland is famed for its glistening lochs and stunning seascapes but are you aware there’s a whole calendar of aquatic events? Discover more about the range of competitions, from swimming to diving and synchro to water polo – there’s even open water swimming events in some breathtaking locations.

Pool events

All across the country, there are sports and leisure centres but you’ll find that most of the indoor swimming events take place in Scotland’s major towns and cities. The annual Grand Prix Meet Series is held with three meets taking place in Inverness, Aberdeen Sport Village and Edinburgh’s Royal Commonwealth Pool on separate dates, usually between November and June. As well as featuring the cream of Scottish swimming talent, participants travel from other parts of the UK and overseas to compete.

In addition to the Grand Prix Meet Series, you’ll find that there are other events, such as the National Short Course Swimming Championships and the National Open Swimming Championships which take place throughout the year, along with a programme of Masters events.

The calendar of diving competitions stretches across the year with competitions across the country including in Edinburgh, Ayr and Dundee. Synchro events take place during most months in Scotland at pools in Stirling, Glasgow and Bo’ness, or if you fancy discovering water polo, you can take in competitions from the poolside and perhaps see sides play in the Scottish National League or even the Scottish Championships.

Open swimming

If visiting Scotland during the summer, check out the programme of open water swimming events and see brave swimmers tackle the icy waters in truly inspiring natural settings. From June through to August, there is usually at least one open swimming event taking place every week in lochs, rivers and estuaries across the country.

One of the highlights is the Great Scottish Swim, part of the Great Swim Series, which takes place on Loch Lomond. Swimmers can compete in distances of a half mile, one mile, or two miles. It’s a magnificent sight to behold; you’ll watch hundreds of swimmers in brightly coloured swim caps powering across one of Scotland’s most iconic lochs. It’s open to swimmers of all abilities, so why not sign up – it’s the perfect way to get revitalised!
