If you enjoy an adrenaline rush and are unfazed by the prospect of sliding down waterfalls, cliff jumping into deep pools and more, canyoning is the ideal adventure sport for you.
There are lots of activity centres and adventure companies across Scotland that offer the experience which includes scrambling up and down rocks and abseiling or jumping down drops and waterfalls.
While it is not for the faint-hearted it’s the perfect activity to enjoy with a group of friends and many companies offer special canyoning and gorge-walking days, throughout the year. You get fully kitted out before you begin with helmets, wetsuits, buoyancy aids and a full safety briefing.
Head for the Highlands and the Great Glen where the canyoning activities from Active Highs range from slides and jumps to abseiling over a 30 ft waterfall. The more experienced can challenge themselves to the Ben Nevis Canyon, which drains from the north face of Scotland’s largest mountain.
On the Isle of Skye, off the west coast, Skye Adventures offers one of four tailored experiences which range in difficulty while you can also choose gorge walking and scrambling with the Arran Adventure Company. But whichever one you choose, you are guaranteed an exhilarating adventure.
There are also lots of great opportunities to experience gorge walking and canyoning across Scotland including with Vertical Descents. The company offers excellent adventure days in locations throughout the country, from the Grey Mare’s Tail in Dumfries & Galloway to Fort William and more.
