Despite being a relatively small city, Perth boasts two art galleries of the caliber you would expect of a major city. There is a varied collection of artworks for you to see including everything from vibrant paintings by the Scottish Colourists and the Pre-Raphaelite artist John Everett Millais to works by the Old Masters.
The fine art collection of Perth Museum and Art Gallery is one of the most impressive in the country. It boasts a small collection of Old Masters, many of which once graced the walls of the grand residences of Perthshire’s aristocracy, alongside an extensive body of Scottish art dating from the 19th century to the present day. You can even see three paintings by by Pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais including a portrait of his wife, Effie, who originally came from Perth.
Housed within a former cast-iron waterworks building, the Fergusson Gallery showcases the life and works of two great pioneers of modern art and dance, John Duncan Fergusson and his wife Margaret Morris. Take in paintings, drawings and sculptures alongside a fascinating collection of memorabilia relating to both artists which includes sketchbooks, letters, photographs, costumes and more.
