Be at the heart of the action and experience one of the most exciting weekends to take place in the Year of Homecoming 2014. Over three days in June, you can be part of a range of unique events and help commemorate a major historic date: the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn. Stirling will host Pipefest, Bannockburn Live and Armed Forces Day in what is set to be a weekend of brilliant moments - and you can enjoy every minute of it.

Pipefest - 27 June

Starting Stirling’s Big Weekend in fine tune is a galvanising celebration of Scottish culture and heritage. Hundreds of pipers, drummers, Highland dancers and clan members, from both Scotland and across the world, will gather in Stirling for Pipefest - a remarkable spectacle for both the eyes and the ears.

The parade will start from the gates of the majestic Stirling Castle and proceed through the city. Led by Pipe Major Ian Duncan, a leading figure in the modern pipe band movement, and the Atholl Highlanders, Europe’s only private army, it will be a truly magnificent sight to behold.

Experience it for yourself. Gaze upon a sea of vibrant tartan and feel the rhythmic pulse of the drums as the parade proudly marches by. You won’t fail to be stirred by the rich tones of the bagpipes.

Armed Forces Day National Event – 28 June

Stirling will also lead the nation in honouring UK Armed Forces servicemen and woman with an exciting day packed full of rousing military displays. The event will be the sixth national event since 2009, and the second to be held in Scotland, after Armed Forces Day in Edinburgh in 2011.

Attended by members of the royal family, previous year’s events have included spectacular aerial demonstrations from the RAF, including the death-defying aerobatics of the world-famous Red Arrows. Thousands of military personnel, veterans and cadets, all turned out in freshly-pressed uniforms, also march in parades.

Bannockburn Live - 28 – 29 June

It may be centuries since swords were drawn on the battlefield, but in June you can experience the Battle of Bannockburn for yourself as it is brought to life during two days of epic battle performances. Watch 300 soldiers wage medieval warfare as they recreate the brutal battle across the course of each afternoon – Bannockburn Live is the biggest event of its kind ever to be held in Scotland.

On this historic site, you can visit medieval encampments and see the preparations that were made for battle in 14th century kitchens, blacksmiths, armouries and living quarters, or head to the clan village and discover more about your ancestors.

A fantastic line-up of live music has just been announced, featuring artists including Dougie MacLean and Julie Fowlis and much more. Check out more about the programme on our blog.

Taste seasonal artisan Scottish produce from the food and drink village and watch demonstrations of both modern and medieval cooking techniques. Get lost in tales of days gone by at storytelling sessions, or get hands on and have a go at creating some ancient crafts.

Over the festival weekend, the new interactive Battle of Bannockburn Visitor Centre, which uses state of the art technology to tell the story of the legendary encounter between the forces of Robert the Bruce and King Edward II, will be open to special King's ticket holders.
