Come and experience Scotland’s fantastic crafts industry and purchase unique hand-made gifts, from jewellery and pottery, to wood carvings, textiles and paintings in a range of styles.

Scotland’s thriving crafts industry offers plenty opportunities to buy unique handmade gifts and lasting mementos of your visit. Why not embark on one of Scotland’s many craft trails, and even watch local crafts being made in front of your very eyes?

Explore the fascinating Orkney Craft Trail and discover unique Orcadian designs in jewellery, paintings, pottery and stunning traditional chairs made from driftwood and oat straw.

Uncover the distinctive Fair Isle knitting style on the Shetland Craft Trail where you can buy beautiful jumpers and hats with the pattern handmade by the Fair Isle Knitters. Stop off at the Shetland Jewellery workshop in Weisdale to see craftsmen making exceptional pieces inspired by Scandinavian mythology, local wildlife and traditional Celtic designs.

For more island arts and crafts, head to the Outer Hebrides and visit the Isle of Harris where you can peruse stunning local paintings inspired by the spectacular surrounding landscape at the Ardbuidhe Cottage Gallery near Drinishader or enjoy the cosy atmosphere of the Skoon Art Café.

One of the country’s most famous fabrics, Harris Tweed is still hand-woven using local wool. You will be able to buy everything from tweed blankets and cushions, to clothes and even stuffed toys.

The Isle of Eriskay is famous for the Eriskay Jersey, a rare and intricately patterned seamless jersey, traditionally made by local women for their fishermen husbands. Purchase your own jumper, handmade by island women, at the community co-op.

Take a trip to the delightful East Neuk of Fife, famous for its pottery. The quaint fishing villages are home to local potters’ workshops including Crail Pottery and Pittenweem Pottery.

Scotland’s Craft Town, West Kilbride, boasts eight craft studios offering the chance to view and buy quality work from both amateur artists and those with international acclaim. These include Hastingwood Basket Works who specialise in traditional willow baskets.
