Scotland’s incredible larder boasts a fantastic range of local produce, with meat and seafood, fruit and vegetables and our most famous export, whisky.
One of the best ways to experience Scotland’s wonderful local produce is to purchase goods directly from the producers at one of Scotland’s farmers’ markets. Over 70 markets are held regularly across the country throughout the year, from Dumfries and Dundee to the Highlands and islands.
The Edinburgh Farmers’ Market, the largest in Scotland, is situated on Castle Terrace in the shadow of the iconic Edinburgh Castle. Up to 55 producers regularly set up stalls here, with specialities including wild boar, water buffalo and venison, alongside common fare such as beef, pork and lamb. Look out for seasonal fare including lobster and guest producers offering everything from organic beer and liqueurs to chocolates and chutney.
Farmers’ markets are a great opportunity to speak directly to the producers themselves and learn more about where the fantastic produce originates and how it is prepared. If you can’t wait until the weekend, pop along to one of Scotland’s many farm shops for a great range of organic produce, from cheese to locally-reared meat and succulent seafood.
