all ferry travel shown in the itinerary, based on two adults plus car. Quotations are available for any number of passengers
two nights accommodation on Lewis, one night on Benbecula and two nights on Barra. If accommodation shown is unavailable on your chosen date, we will endeavour to substitute an equivalent alternative.
Start your holiday from Ullapool or Oban. No Ullapool start or finish on Sundays. No Oban finish on Saturdays. This example is based on an Ullapool start – for Oban, just reverse the route..
Day 1
Sail from Ullapool to Stornoway. Choose a morning sailing if you would like time for an afternoon circular tour of Lewis. First night Stornoway.
Day 2
A full day to relax and enjoy the laid back atmosphere. Maybe take a walk through wooded parkland, alongside tumbling waterfalls or shop for Harris Tweed at bargain prices. Alternatively, take a drive out to the north-east on either the Point peninsula to watch seabirds or to Tolsta to walk the extensive beaches. Second night Stornoway.
Day 3
Tour the coastline of South Harris on your way to the ferry at Leverburgh, for your crossing to Berneray and the Uists. To see the fabulous shell-sand beaches take the west coast route or follow the east coast to visit the rocky bays and inlets of the 'Golden Road'. From the ferry at Berneray, it’s less than an hour's drive to your overnight stop, so you can afford to spend time exploring the side roads – look out for otters and a wealth of birdlife. Third night Benbecula.
Day 4
Continue the leisurely journey to Eriskay, for the crossing to Barra. On the way, enjoy a drive through the Loch Druidibeg National Nature Reserve, or buy award-winning flaky smoked salmon at the smoke house – perfect for a delicious picnic treat. Your ferry to the Isle of Barra affords wonderful views of small, uninhabited islands where you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of seals or dolphins. You'll almost certainly see the albatross-like gannets as they spiral and dive vertically into the sea to catch fish. Fourth night Barra.
Day 5-6
There’s plenty of chance to relax on Barra. You might stroll directly out of the hotel onto the Atlantic facing beach, to watch the rolling waves breaking on the shore. Or explore the island by car, on foot or on a rented bike. In the tiny town of Castlebay, boats carry visitors the short distance to fascinating Kisimul Castle, home of the Clan MacNeil. Fifth night Barra.
On day six, the ferry journey from Castlebay to Oban completes your adventure through mysterious lands.
