Scotland has an extensive road network covering the country, providing fast and efficient travel between cities and major towns and easy access to more rural areas.
The motorway network is chiefly concentrated in the central belt with major links further north to Aberdeen and south to England. Trunk roads (also called A roads) connect the rest of the country.

National Tourist Routes
As an alternative to the main trunk roads and motorways, Scotland's 12 National Tourist Routes provide the travelling holidaymaker with attractive sightseeing routes through each region of the country. Varying in length and as diverse as the Scottish landscape itself, these routes have been selected not only because they are attractive in their own right but also because they offer a variety of things to see and do on the way to your chosen destination. The National Tourist routes are well signposted and easy to follow.
