The Festival of Architecture 2016 is a  year-long celebration of the richness and breadth of Scotland’s architecture and built environment.

Discover beloved national landmarks, rediscovered gems, and contemporary designs at the forefront of cutting-edge design in this  packed programme of events and activities which will showcase the country’s architectural landscape on a truly international scale.

Running throughout 2016 as part of the Year of Architecture, Innovation and Design, choose from hundreds of exhibitions, workshops, film screenings, concerts and other events, featuring interesting individuals from home and abroad, and take the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in Scotland’s remarkable man-made landscape.

Hinterland

The official launch event of the festival is set at what is arguably Scotland’s most iconic modernist landmark, St Peter’s Seminary. From 18 – 27 March, fifty years on from its opening, this derelict monument will be re-animated with light and a specially commissioned choral soundtrack to reveal its full magnificence against an atmospheric wooded backdrop.

Here is a taster of some of the  other highlights of the festival.

Scotstyle

There is more to Scotland’s architectural history than just castles. Discover the top 100 buildings dating from the period 1916-2015 as chosen by the public. This nation-wide tour will take in some of the very best of Scotland’s 20th and early 21st century architecture. The 100 buildings with be selected by an expert panel from a pool nominated by the public.

Adventures in Space

From Blade Runner to Flash Gordon to The Matrix, Sci-Fi movies have and continue to exert a powerful influence over the popular imagination. At The Lighthouse in Glasgow, delve into the visionary futuristic cities and structures depicted in films which span the birth of cinema to the present day.

July to September 2016

The Ideal Hut Show

Ever think about down-sizing? Get some inspiration at this fantastic exhibition featuring 20 standard model garden sheds transformed and customised by leading architects, designers and celebrities from Scotland and beyond.

The made-over sheds will be on display at various venues including Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and Botanic Gardens, Glasgow.

Out of their Heads: Building Portraits of Scottish Architects

This exhibition aims to put a human face to some of Scotland’s most renowned buildings. Held on the ground floor of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, portraits, photographs and busts of some of the nation’s greatest architects will be displayed alongside representations of the buildings they created.

Pop-up World Cities Expo

Cities across the world will reveal their designs of pavilions to be located in Mound Square in the heart of Edinburgh. Discover how architects of different nationalities and backgrounds have broached the task of creating innovative and inviting public spaces.
