“We recently caught up with Amie O’Shaughnessy, of Ciao Bambino!, about her and her family’s trip to Scotland. Organised for them through Adventures by Disney, the trip took them on a 5 day itinerary designed to encompass the magic of Brave. Amie has very kindly put together her top 5 sights and sounds for us! All thoughts are that of Amie / Ciao Bambino!”
Five Unforgettable Activities in Scotland with Kids
Scotland seems to be on every travel bucket list these days. For good reason! My family just got back from a trip where we experienced a condensed version of Adventure By Disney’s new Scotland itinerary for families inspired by the movie Brave. Our action-packed tour was both engaging and educational.
Here’s a look at five highlights from our itinerary, which included Edinburgh, as well as a journey to Scotland’s spectacular Highlands:
1. Search for Nessie on Loch Ness
The most famous lake monster in the world resides in Scotland. Families can learn about Nessie’s history and then conduct their own search on a boat or canoe tour of Loch Ness.
2. Visit a haunted castle
Glamis Castle, the childhood home of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, is rumored to be haunted. A castle tour brings centuries of spooky stories to life, and provides a fascinating glimpse of royal country life in Scotland.
3. Bike or Ride a Highland Pony in the largest natural forest in Britain
A natural paradise, Rothiemurchus Estate is a privately owned wilderness area in the Highlands. Families can bike or ride Highland Ponies through pristine, magnificent woods and meadows at the foot of snow-capped mountains.
4. Roam the ruins of a stunning coastal castle
What’s left of Dunnotar Castle dramatically perched over the sea is truly a sight to behold. Home to some of the most powerful families in Scotland over the centuries, this remarkable castle is the very place where the Scottish crown jewels were heroically saved from destruction from Cromwell’s army.
5. Weave with masters at Dovecot Studios
Dovecot Studios, the oldest working tapestry factory in Scotland, is in central Edinburgh. Kids and adults alike appreciate seeing weavers create tapestry masterpieces from the same tools they’ve been using for generations. Lucky participants can try their hand on the loom.
We loved experiencing Scotland with Disney. The focus was the destination, not Disney characters. The variety of activities paired with cultural lessons creates a magical trip that is fun for all. Learn more about our Adventures by Disney family experience on the Ciao Bambino blog. This tour is recommend for ages 8 and up.
