Nestling in delightful gardens Anwoth Old Schoolhouse provides an idyllic haven for couples seeking comfortable, homely, characterful holiday accommodation in beautiful surroundings
Anwoth Old Schoolhouse is situated in peaceful and picturesque Anwoth at the heart of the scenic Fleet Valley a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. It provides an ideal base from which to explore, either by foot, bicycle or car the beautiful, unspoilt countryside and magnificent coastline of Dumfries and Galloway. There are many interesting and varied walks from the doorstep and several quiet sandy beaches within a few short miles.
Many species of birds inhabit the garden and the Red Squirrels provide endless hours of entertainment with their acrobatic skills. Red Kites and Buzzards fly overhead and the occasional Otter may be spotted as it vies with the heron as they search for the wee brown trout in the burn which runs through the garden. Roe Deer, Fallow Deer and Badgers inhabit the neighbouring woodland.
The quaint wee toon of Gatehouse-of-Fleet, with its good selection of hotels, pubs, cafes and attractive shops can be reached by a gentle stroll of just one and a half miles of quiet scenic country road or via a more adventurous short climb over Trusty's Hill with wonderful views of sea, hills and Cardoness Castle. A short diversion can be made to view the Pictish Stones and hill top monument dedicated to Samuel Rutherford the first minister at Anwoth Old Kirk.
Golfers and Fishermen are well catered for with several challenging golf courses in the local area with sea, loch and river fishing close by.
The School was built in 1831 and closed in 1872. After its closure it was used for housing the horse and carriages which transported people to the Church opposite. The hook used for tethering the horses remains in the schoolroom wall and brass lamps which came from the Church hang from the ceiling. In the 1970's the school featured in the infamous cult film 'The Wickerman' and some aspects of the schoolroom which featured in the film remain the same. It is now a Grade C Listed Building
