The Salen Hotel is a traditional Highland hotel. Built around the late Victorian period on a prominent site within the village of Salen at the head of the Ardnamurchan peninsula, it lies in an area renowned for its seclusion and natural beauty.
The Salen hotel is family run and has been lovingly restored over the past few years to provide the visitor with beautiful accommodation. The bar is warm and welcoming and most importantly it is well stocked with a wide selection of wines and spirits.
The Salen Hotel has worked hard to provide good quality food cooked by our in house chefs, using, where possible, local produce. The menu changes seasonally to take advantage of the shellfish during the summer months and venison and game through the autumn and winter season. Please look through the dining page to view the current menu.
We also have a recently built self catering cottage next door to the hotel offering comfortable accommodation for up to four with views over Loch Sunart.
Whether you want an active holiday or just a relaxing time, Ardnamurchan has something to offer you.
On the land you can visit some of the many historical sites this area has to offer. From castles and lighthouses to standing stones and mines, we have it all.
Walking
If you are coming to Ardnamurchan for the walking there are many stunning and remote paths to take which will suit those wanting a days hiking to those wanting a leisurely stroll. The Sunart Oakwoods initiative has built many all-ability access areas throughout the woods surrounding Salen, including a wildlife hide where you can observe the seals in the Loch or if you are really lucky an otter or two.
Relaxing
For something less strenuous why not visit the Natural History Centre at Glenmore, or visit the Ardnamurchan Lighthouse.
The art gallery at Resipole Studios is also worth a visit, exhibitions change regularly and studio space is available for visiting artists. They also run courses for those wishing to learn drawing or painting skills.
There is a newly established company, West Highland Workshops, offering all inclusive workshops in various different crafts and skills from photography and ceramics to bushcraft and geology further details of this can be found at www.westhighlandworkshops.co.uk
For those really wishing to indulge themselves there are a number of alternative therapy practitioners in the area from reflexology and Indian head massage to remedial massage for those who have over done it with the cycling or walking!
Ferry
The ferry from Kilchoan to Tobermory is just a short drive away. It is well worth a visit to Mull whether you take the car over or just go on foot spending the day discovering the story in Balamory!
On the Lochs
On the water if you are arriving by your own boat, (there is a mooring in Salen Bay for the free use of hotel patrons, please telephone for details of buoy. Alternatively there are visitor moorings available from Salen Jetty, tel: 01967 431510 and speak to Mark or Jan to book) or if you want to hire a boat there is the solution within the area. West Scotland Marine will hire you a boat to self-drive or take you to an area to fish or dive. Alternatively you may want a leisurely cruise up Loch Shiel with Loch Shiel Cruises. The boat leaves Acharacle for a cruise up to Glenfinnan from where a coach will bring you back again.
If you are intending to kayak in the area there are plenty of launch sites nearby, including the jetty in Salen itself.
Cycling
Cycling is proving ever more popular in the area due to the quiet nature of the roads and the rugged terrain (for those seeking more of a challenge). If you don’t want the trouble of bringing your own bike they are available to hire from either Sunart Cycles in Strontian or Duneira Croft in Kentra.
Beaches
Ardnamurchan also boasts some stunning white sandy beaches. A visit to Sanna Bay or Singing Sands is well worth it.
Shooting and Fishing
There are opportunities for different types of both these sports in and around Ardnamurchan. Deer stalking and salmon fishing can be arranged through the hotel on the local estates. Some day shooting is available on certain dates throughout the year at the local clay shooting club and fishing other than for salmon is readily available by boat or from the land on the local lochs.
Deer stalking certificate level one courses are also being arranged locally and anyone interested should contact the hotel for details of the next available course.
Situated on the stunning West Coast of Scotland, Ardnamurchan is a long, narrow peninsula along the shores of Loch Sunart and includes the most westerly tip of the British Mainland.
Morvern, alongside it, flanks the other side of Loch Sunart and the sound of Mull. Moidart to the east of the peninsula has Loch Shiel as one boundary and the sea as its other. Within these regions are the villages of Acharacle, Salen, Strontian, Ardgour, Lochaline, Kilchoan and Glenuig - each with their own charm and attractions.
