Inveraray Castle and Gardens

Inveraray

Inveraray, Crinan Canal and Kilmartin Glen

Travel to Inveraray, from your chosen meeting point. The tour includes a visit to Inveraray Castle and an opportunity to see the Crinan Canal, Kilmartin Glen and visit Carnassarie Castle before returning to your destination.

A day spent in Mid Argyll should be on the wish list of any one visiting the west of Scotland, especially if you are a descendant of the Clan Campbell as these are the lands of your ancestors.

The day will start with a drive to Inveraray, where you can visit the historic town and castle. Inveraray Castle is home to The 13th Duke of Argyll, 27th Chieftain of the Clan Campbell and was built between 1746 and 1789, it is said to be an early example of Gothic revivalism. Commisioned by the third duke of Argyll it is the work of the Architect Roger Morris assisted by William and Robert Adams. It was used to Film an episode of the famous BBC TV series Downton Abbey and has appeared on channel 5 in Susan Calman's secret Scotland.

After a scenic drive up the coast road passing through small towns such as Furnace and Minard, we arrive at the county town of Lochgilphead. After a short stop and a visit to Crinan Canal we drive north into kilmartin Glen, known as the "Birthplace of a nation". It is from the early settlers of this area, the Scotti's from Ireland, that the nation of Scotland takes its name. A Strenuous walk up Dunadd fort to see where the ancient kings of Dalriada were crowned is possible however, an easier option is a visit to Kilmartin museum of ancient culture nearby where the history of this area is explained. We will complete our day with a stop at carnassarie before driving to your chosen destination. You will be given plenty of time for photographic opportunities during your tour and a stop will be made for lunch at a place of your choosing.

Due to major re building work Kilmartin museum is closed at until 2022 and Inveraray castle is re opening 27 May 2021 with Covid 19 protocols in place, advanced booking is required.

As we are a bespoke tour company we can amend the itinerary to suit your needs, interests and time available. We offer door to door service and will gladly pick you up and return you to your chosen destination.

Although we do run tours all year round certain Places of interest close during the winter so please get in touch for details.
