Islay (optional Jura) & the Argyll/Kintyre coast – 3 days to explore & experience

Islay – Visit Scotland

Islay & Jura – WildaboutArgyll

As this is your own private small group tour, the itinerary is very flexible and along the way, we can add additional nearby stops and depending on the weather it is also possible to swap the route of day 1 and day 3 around. So the route each day is a sample itinerary and can be amended if you prefer.

Day 1
  • We pick up from many locations, incl. the Stirling area.
  • We head out west through the Loch Lomond and Trossachs nationalpark. Loch Long and Loch Fyne, Inveraray and Lochgilphead and will have a brief stop along the way to the ferry port of Kennacraig.

The location of your accommodation will determine if on day 1, we will already be taking the ferry over to Islay and have more time on Islay

or alternatively stay the night on the mainland and then have more time for the many spectacular sights along the Argyll & Kintyre coast.

1st night

Day 2

We arrive into Kennacraig for the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry – arriving into either Port Askaig or Port Ellen on Islay

The ferry has all conveniences, catering facilities, a restaurant/cafe, indoor seating and outdoor viewing for the stunning journey, which should allow you to either take a nap, go for a late breakfast/coffee, an early lunch or just enjoy enjoy the beautiful journey.

Time on Islay

We will have a tour of Islay with its various beautiful villages, Finlaggan, home of the MacDonalds’ Lordship of the isles, the beaches, a whiksy distillery (if you wish for example Bowmore, Laphroaig, Lagavulin or Ardbeg)

Port Charlotte, scenic Portnahaven, beaches, Kildalton 8th century celtic cross or take a walk to the Oa and the American monument above the sea cliffs.

Optional visit of the Isle of Jura

From Port Askaig across the sound of Jura it is a short ferry crossing over to Jura, a wild and remote island, quite different from Islay, with its many green fields, sheep and farms. Jura is also being dominated by the 3 Paps (prominent mountains) of Jura.

We should be able to accommodate everyon’e wishes and after our offical tour give everyone free time, so that could involve dropping off some at one of the whisy distilleries, others to go walking and take others across for a mini tour of 2-3 hours over to Jura, the Jura side trip would be of no extra cost to yourselves and allow for some stunning photo opportunities.

Apart from that we like to keep it very flexible, depending on the individuals preferences, some might wish to visit one or more whisky distilleries, some might wish to go walking in the nature reserves or along the coast, others prefer for us to take the short boat trip over to Jura to explore and savour some of this magical, wild and spectacular island.

Jura

As every group and individuals are different and we are small group, flexible and like to tailor make your trip according to your needs,

Add on / extension options, if you have more time (or potentially for day 1 and day 3) for:

Island extensions from Islay

  • longer stay on Islay (especially if you are into whisky)
  • longer stay on Jura (especially if you are into walking)
  • taking the ferry to Colonsay and spending time there (especially if you are into beaches)

2nd night

Day 3

The location of your accommodation will determine if in the morning of day 3, we will still be on Islay – and still have a bit more time for Islay – or are already on the Scottish mainland and have more time for our return journey, which could include:

  • long the stunning Kilberry route, depending on the tide, we might spot some seals, can see the ancient Kilberry slapstone visit beautiful Tarbert/Loch Fyne cross the mountains for a view of the Isle of Arran and a possible walk around Skipness castle and heading south along the Kintyre peninsula via the stunning Machrihanish sand dunes and the surfbeach towards Campbeltown
  • We have a chance to walk over to the tidal Davaar tidal island and heading towards the Mull of Kintyre with views over to Northern Ireland from Southend before completing our journey around Kintyre along the eastern shores through beautiful Carradale and views of the Isle of Arran.
  • At Tarbert/Loch Fyne we have the option to take the scenic short cut and ferry over to the Cowal penninsula from where via Loch Long and a stop at Loch Lomond we head back to Stirling and locations in the Scottish Central belt
