The village of Kettletoft served as the main port on the island during the herring boom in the late 19th century and early 20th centuries. One of the islands main attractions is the spectacular Quoyness Chambered Cairn. This fine example of a Megalithic tomb is located on the peninsula known as Elsness.
Getting to the island involves a variety of transport. There is a direct ferry from Kirkwall pier to the Loth ferry terminal to the south of Sanday. You can also fly direct to Sanday from Kirkwall airport in around 11 minutes.
