Andy Barlow Dirt School

How did you get started cycling?

I've ridden all kinds of bikes for over 25 years. I've run Dirt School for over 12 years and lead all of the technical sessions for the BASE mountain biking course at Borders College. It's the only performance mountain biking course of its kind in the world. Last year, a quarter of the UK squad which competed in Canada at the World Championships were former students of mine!

We also offer three tiers of kid lessons which are great way to inspire youngsters to get active during the summer holidays.

What do you love most about your job?

I love my job because I get to see so many riders improve on a regular basis. I'm always being approached in car parks or by random hillsides by folk wanting to let me know that they got so much out of one of our courses and are now riding things they never dreamed possible.

It's incredibly rewarding to know you can make such a huge difference to someone's skill and confidence in the saddle.

What are you looking forward to experiencing in Scotland?

My wife and I just moved to the Tweed Valley so I'm most looking forward to simply being able to ride all of the local trails from my front door. We're both cyclists, and enjoy road and gravel riding just as much as mountain biking.

There's so much we can't wait to explore.

Anything else we should know?

Yes. Check out our YouTube channel. It's a fantastic source of riding tips and tricks and offers a taste of the variety of trails you can enjoy here in the borders.
