Meikle Westland Farm Animal Sanctuary
Looking for somewhere to wind down and animal therapy up? Spacious, fully equipped, s/c lodges (2 bed & 3 bed) each with own private Hot Tub on an animal rescue farm in the beautiful East Ayrshire countryside where you can enjoy a peaceful and relaxing stay on the farm surrounded by a beautiful 75 acre slice of East Ayrshire with the river Nith bordering the land. Plenty to do and experience both on and off the farm and perfectly located for all nearby attractions such as Dumfries House, Drumlanrig & Culzean Castles as well as Ayr and Troon beaches around 35 mins drive away.
There is plenty to do with entertainment for all the family both on and off site. The terraces with garden furniture or the private hot tub are perfect for sitting in and watching the busy bird life, animals and gorgeous sunsets from. Once evening arrives, why not sit in the hot tub watching the glorious clear skies at night? Being so close to the Galloway Forest Park (first park in UK given the dark sky status) you cannot beat the stars here. You are welcome to say hello to all the animals, they are mostly all rescues who love a cuddle. Did anyone say sheep selfies? Some of the pet sheep are Valais Blacknose sheep, known as one of the friendliest and cutest sheep in the world! If you'd prefer to stay around the lodge there's still plenty to do with a smart tv, dvd player, books, wifi, your own private hot tub and lots of board games to keep everyone entertained. There is also a firepit/bbq grill that you can use. (Wood only and everything you need to start the fire can be provided for £8)
Walks on the land can be taken straight from the door and you’ll find yourself surrounded by beautiful scenery with a walk along the river Nith which borders the farm’s grounds. On this walk you can see all the way down the Nithsdale valley and on a clear day you can see the village of Wanlockhead, the highest village in Scotland, which is always worth a visit. The area is abundant with wildlife, including birds of prey, herons, Roe deer, hares and otters.
Things to do locally
The local New Cumnock Swimming Pool is unique in Scotland, being the only heated, open-air, freshwater swimming pool. It was opened in 2017 by Prince Charles who gave his patronage to ensure that it wasn’t demolished. There are many golf courses around as well as a local spa at the Lochside Hotel if you fancy a day of pampering. Its restaurant is very popular with guests here too. Ayr, Irvine & Troon’s sandy beaches and popular beachside towns are under an hour away. How about panning for gold at Wanlockhead, the highest village in Scotland? This village offers some of the most spectacular views right down the farm’s Nithsdale valley on a clear day. If you are a fan of Scotland's own Robert Burns there are plenty of memorials and museums celebrating him and his works. There are plenty of recommended riding schools in the area too if any of your party wanted to do any horse-riding. Or what about going for an experience day with the nearby Blackstone Farm's gorgeous Clydesdales and ride them on the beach? Or if you prefer horses, ponies and donkeys from the ground, we offer pamper sessions where you can help groom the resident rescue horses, ponies or donkeys for some one-on-one animal therapy time for you. Your donation for this goes straight back into the animals’ upkeep and care.
Galloway Forest Park, which is the largest forest in the UK, with its three hundred square miles of wild beauty is waiting to be explored. It is the first park in the UK given the much-coveted status of a Dark Skies Park and is a short drive away. It has gorgeous scenery and wildlife as well as the Scottish Dark Sky Observatory located on the Northern edge of the park. The park boasts tranquil valleys, rugged rock faces, forest, moorland, lochs and ancient woodland, with a huge diversity of wildlife including red and roe deer, wild goats and many birds of prey.
Glasgow is just over an hour away for a fabulous day out in town or, even nearer, popular seaside towns Ayr, Irvine and Troon are only a 30 minute drive away. Ayrshire's rich history is beautifully on display at nearby Drumlanrig and Culzean castles with their accompanying stunning gardens and grounds. Drumlanrig Castle itself has hosted the Tough Mudder competitions for several years and also has mountain bike trails if you fancy bringing your bikes. Culzean Castle being Ayrshire’s most popular tourist attraction, has a network of wooded trails passing along the beach and is well worth a visit. The farm is located 10 minutes from Dumfries House whose conservation Prince Charles oversaw. The 18th-century stately home is set in 2000 acres, with the architecture of Robert Adam with the sumptuous furniture of Thomas Chippendale. Culzean Castle and Dumfries House are both spectacular, inside and out and definitely worth booking a tour. So there really is lots to do for all the family.
