Stonelea Cottage Holidays
Modern self catering eco cottage, set in a peaceful wildlife haven at the edge of a rural village close to Selkirk. An ideal base for walkers, cyclists and motorcyclists to visit the Scottish Borders, Northumberland coast and Edinburgh.
Our bright, warm, modern and well equipped eco cottage is set in our 11 acre / 4.5 hectare smallholding, on the edge of the village of Ashkirk, under a mile from the A7 between Carlisle and Edinburgh and midway between the two.
The cottage has everything you need for a relaxing, effortless stay with big sofas, superfast broadband, smart TV, comfy beds, modern kitchen, power shower, peace and quiet, fabulous scenery, drying room, secure motorbike and cycle storage and washing facilities and a drying room for wet gear.
Downstairs is a large open plan and sociable kitchen / dining / living area with smart TV and music system. The cottage has two bedrooms, one double and one twin and a sizeable bathroom with power shower and bath.
Outside there is ample parking, a garden, patios all around the cottage, outdoor seating and a barbecue table.
Our smallholding includes our house, the cottage, a new barn and brick outbuildings (available to guests for secure cycle, motorbike or gear storage), paddocks, woodland, gardens and vegetable and fruit “allotment”.
It's a short walk to the village pub and golf course, close to tranquil forests and scenic lochs.
This is an ideal base to visit the Scottish Borders, the Northumberland coast and Edinburgh, with great transport links for a walking, cycling, sight-seeing or motorbike holiday.
Ashkirk stands on the Ale Water river between Hawick and Selkirk.
The nearest shops are at Selkirk (5 miles) or Hawick (6 miles) and all the major supermarkets (Tesco, Sainsbury, Asda, Morrisons) will deliver to the cottage.
There is a golf club with a bar-restaurant open to the public, a wee former blacksmith’s shop - The Smiddy bar and restaurant - a village hall and a church.
We’re on a quiet road that goes west towards the village of Ettrickbridge where there is another recently refurbished and excellent pub serving real ales and traditional pub food.
There are lots of options for exploring on foot, bike, car or public transport from the cottage.
This area is a haven for wildlife. Our land has several different types of habitat including a rewilded area, and supports diverse and unusual wildflowers.
We regularly see a wide variety of birds as well as hares, deer, bats, red squirrels, stoats and badgers. Otters have been seen on our local lochs. Every Scottish Borders town is on a river and it’s not unusual to spot dippers, oyster catchers and kingfishers.
What guests like about the location is that it has the best of both worlds. It’s easy to access (you could easily get here and around the region by public transport) but very peaceful.
We’re 0.7 miles / 1.1 km from the main (but quiet) A7 from Edinburgh to Carlisle so even if you’ve had a bit of a drive to get here, if you follow our directions, you won’t be driving for miles along country lanes trying to find us.
That also means it’s easy to get around on days out using your own or inexpensive frequent public transport.
You can get to the Scottish or Northumberland coast for the day, or by car, train or bus right into the centre of Edinburgh. You could equally well occupy yourself locally with walks straight out of the door, or combining a walk with a visit to any of the unique small towns - all with free parking - that make up the Scottish Borders.
There are several long distance walking and cycling routes that cross the region, and each town has its own guide book of local walks - we have copies of these and other maps, walking and cycling books in the cottage.
In less than 20 to 30 minutes you can reach any of the other Borders towns while driving through lovely scenery.
Motorcyclists love staying here. We have scenic sweeping roads without the traffic you’ll encounter further north on the more populated routes.
Nearby Innerleithen is a mecca for mountain bikers and there are several off road and road cycling trails.
Jedburgh has a beautiful Abbey, Mary Queen of Scots house and delightful river walks.
Melrose has some lovely cafés and special occasion restaurants, the Abbey, a Roman Camp and walks along the river Tweed.
Towards Moffatt is the beautiful Grey Mare's Tail waterfall and St Mary’s Loch.
Nearby Abbotsford House and gardens is the very popular former home of Sir Walter Scott.
Kelso boasts the delightful Floors Castle and gardens, an Abbey and a cobbled square with a micro-brewery, cafés, boutiques and shops.
Galashiels has the spectacular Great Tapestry of Scotland, housed in its own modern purpose-built building in the centre of town.
What we love about living here is that the Scottish Borders is a well kept secret. It’s as good as staying in a national park location but without the crowds. We love sharing its secrets with our guests.
