The impressive Craigie Hotel was built in 1885, designed by George Washington Browne for the eminent zoologist James Cossar Ewart. Ewart was born in Penicuik and went on to become Professor of Natural History at Edinburgh University. He is remembered for his pioneering genetic work with zebras, which once roamed free in the gardens here. His life's work became known as "The Penicuik Experiment" and photos of the Professor with his zebras can be see around the hotel.
The Craigie has 16 beautifully appointed boutique style bedrooms, all recently refurbished with a blend of traditional and modern. Each room has been individually designed to bring comfort and luxury to our guests, with sleek en suite bathrooms, sumptuous soft furnishings and the bespoke Craigie tartan adorning the walls. Facilities include plasma screens and espresso machines, and the hotel offers 24 hour room service. There are classic double rooms, deluxe double and twin rooms, family rooms and a superbly appointed bridal suite.
The restaurant is open to residents and non residents alike, and is open all day long, 7 days a week, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. We believe in the outstanding quality of fresh Scottish produce and work with local ingredients to produce seasonal menus. Childrens menus are available, and we happily cater for all dietary requirements.
