Wildlife abounds. The deer graze gracefully in the early mornings on the garden lawns. Buzzards and crows perform aerial acrobatics, tangling above in competition for territory. Heron take up vigil on the rocks ever on the lookout for an unwary crab. Seal, porpoise and otter can be seen occasionally from the shore and the bay echoes with the 'kleep kleep' of the oyster catchers and the 'ah-ooo ah-ooo' of the amorous eider ducks.
The local area of Assynt has a wealth of walks for all abilities, from a gentle stroll through ancient forest to a pebble beach at the White Shore or a full days trek to the top of Mount Sulliven, the granite sugar loaf that towers over the village dominating the area landscape. There is a popular boat trip along Loch Glencoul that affords a wonderful opportunity to see clear evidence of some of the planets turbulent geological past, the Moine Thrust where a layer of some of the oldest rock formations were forced up and over some of the youngest. There are several sandy beaches along the coast, the nearest being Achmelvich with soft white sand and a turquoise sea reminiscent of a more tropical location.
The ancient landscape, carved by the glaciers, together with our geographic position at the end of the Gulf Stream, creating regular rainfall, helped form many lochs and rivers. These, together with the sea, offer a superb variety of fishing, combining with the spectacular scenery, to create some of the finest angling experiences.
