Wilderness Scotland - Road Cycling Holidays
Wilderness Scotland is a 5 Star, award-winning adventure travel and ecotourism company specialising in active holidays in the Highlands and Islands.
Superb scenery, quiet highland roads and great hospitality are the hallmarks of road cycling holidays with Wilderness Scotland.
Guided Road Cycling HolidaysOur group road cycling holidays are open for individuals to join and have small group sizes.
Under the guidance of our expert and qualified guides we'll take you to see some of Scotland's most fantastic landscapes and culturally interesting destinations.
The trips range from an easy cruise from the Ardnamurchan Peninsula to the Ise of Skye to a challenging week of riding the highest mountain roads in the UK. Our on-the-road approach balances great guiding and insights. The group will always be accompanied by a support vehicle, always at the ready with drinks, snacks and friendly lift if you need a break. The support vehicle will also take care of your luggage transfers between destinations. Prefer to explore at your own pace? You can use the provided route notes to meet up with the group at the designated stops.
Most of our guided group departures leave and return to railway stations as we encourage our clients to book rail travel where possible and travel in a sustainable way.
- Road Cycling - The Grand Tour: A classic road cycling tour travelling 230 miles from the Highland capital of Inverness to the Scottish capital of Edinburgh via the Cairngorms National Park.
- Road Cycling - The Outer Hebrides: This 7 day epic of a cycling trip in the Outer Hebrides takes you through some of the most beautiful and unspoilt regions of Scotland, cycling past beautiful white sand beaches, rugged mountains and stunning glens.

- Road Cycling - Scotland's National Parks: The roads in and around Scotland’s National Parks are quite possibly our favourite places in the country for riding your bike. With beautiful landscapes, smooth and quiet roads, charming villages, and plentiful cafes and pubs, it’s a cycling paradise.
- Road Cycling - Coast to Coast: The Coast to Coast cycle is a rewarding journey of 262 miles/419km travelling from Aberdeen on the east coast to Applecross in the west. Cycling across the country we’ll climb over 17,000 feet/5,180 metres, including the UK’s highest and in our opinion arguably the most challenging road climb.
- Road Cycling - The North Coast 500: Ride the best sections of the North Coast 500, on a 7-day road cycling tour through the untamed beauty of the Scottish Highlands. Travel on our NC500 cycling holiday to experience a satisfying active journey – swap four wheels for two!
- Road Cycling - Tour of the Scottish Borders: Dotted with quaint villages and castles this area has spectacular scenery from rolling hills and lush glens to winding rivers and a beautiful coastline. Its quiet country roads mean it’s one of the best areas of Scotland to explore by bike.
- Road Cycling - The Five Countries Tour: Cycle through the 5 countries of Great Britain and Ireland – all in one highlight-packed bike tour. Over 13 days ride 750 km, experience the different cultures and the best of what’s on offer in these islands.
Self guided is the perfect solution for those who want to explore the wilds of Scotland at your own pace, and value a bit more flexibility. Cycling at your own pace, you’ll enjoy the freedom to speed up or slow down according to your preferences, venture off to any of the many fascinating stops along the way or stop to get the perfect photo, without feeling like you’re on someone else’s schedule.
Our Self Guided Plus+ trips are not guided but provide a highly personalised level of support you won’t find on regular self-guided bike tours. A dedicated member of the Wilderness Team will be on hand throughout the trip, preforming the equivalent role of the “soigneur” a key member of every pro cycling team. Essentially they will take care of everything on the trip, except for the riding. Throughout your adventure, they will be on hand to drive the support vehicle, transferring your luggage, provide snacks and drinks throughout the day, shuttle riders where required, offer navigational advice, first aid and take care of cleaning and servicing bikes at the end of the day.
(Self Guided Plus+) Skye & the Inner Hebrides: Our Skye and the Inner Hebrides trip is the perfect way to explore iconic Scottish islands by bike. Watch stunning views unfold from your saddle as you journey from the Isle of Mull, through the wilds of the Ardnamurchan Peninsula and on to the fabled Isle of Skye.
(Self Guided Plus+) The Caledonia Way: The Caledonia Way is Scotland’s newest long distance cycle trip. Covering 235mi/375km, the route travels through some of the country’s most iconic scenery combining quiet rural roads with traffic-free cycleways and some gravel as you journey south to north through the heart of the Scottish Highlands.
(Self Guided Plus+) The North Coast 500: 500 miles in 7 days. This epic adventure on two wheels will take you through some of the wildest and most spectacular roads and scenery in Europe. With your warm and welcoming accommodation arranged, your bikes prepped, and your soigneur taking care of all the details, all you have to think about is turning the wheels.
(Self Guided Plus+) The Outer Hebrides: For the time-crunched cyclist, this trip offers the chance to explore the entire chain of the Outer Hebrides in 4 memorable days of riding. Starting with an unforgettable flight and beach landing on the Island of Barra, your route of some 300km/200mi will take you through 10 different islands culminating in a spectacular finish at the wild northern point of the Isle of Lewis.
Self Guided Cycling - The Cairngorms National Park: This self-guided cycling holiday explores the beautiful Cairngorms National Park. Enjoying a combination of loop rides and point to point rides, you cycle on quiet roads through outstanding scenery. In your free time, explore the local villages, nearby distilleries and a range of other local attractions. Each night, stay in carefully selected small hotels and guest houses, which reflect the character of this region.
Private Road Cycling HolidaysWe can also run private road cycling tours - contact us to discuss your ideas and let us design the perfect road biking itinerary for you, regardless of what level of cyclist you are.

Our Green EthosWe are firmly committed to responsible tourism and all of our tours reflect that commitment. Our holidays are purposefully designed to provide a visitor experience that maximises the positive benefits of tourism while minimising any negative impacts. We are staunch advocates of the Leave No Trace principles, in which our guides are fully trained. On all of our activities, our guides will ensure that the impact on the environment, wildlife and local community is minimised. During your trip, our guides will teach you how to do this so that the knowledge is spread on your travels in Scotland and further afield. Our guides are ambassadors for Scotland's wild places and are passionate about sharing their knowledge.
It's not just on trips that we promote sustainable processes! We operate our holidays out of a carbon-neutral headquarters which is powered by renewable energy. We reduce, reuse and recycle, using environmentally friendly products from local suppliers where possible. In addition, our office car park hosts two public EV charging stations, and we subsidise staff usage. We encourage car-sharing and compete monthly for the most environmentally friendly commute! Lastly, we are committed to contributing annually to a nature-based charity that promotes conservation in Scotland. Check out our Sustainability Page for more info.
