Largs Ayrshire

Largs and Isle of Cumbrae private tour.

Exploring Largs the Firth of Clyde, Isle of Cumbrae and Millport with a private guide.

LARGS, PORTENCROSS CASTLE, CUMBRAE & MILLPORT.

(6 HOURS)

In days gone by, the city folk flocked in droves, “doon the watter” to the pretty seaside town of Largs on the Clyde Coast for their summer holidays. Today, Largs still attracts families and visitors from far and wide and offers spectacular views across the Firth of Clyde from walks in and around the town. Throughout the summer months there is a diverse calendar of events hosted within the area.

In September families and kids can visit the ever popular viking village during the annual Viking Festival. Pre-booked wildlife “Rib” cruises are available from the yacht haven and don’t forget Nardini’s art deco café, world famous for its ice cream.

In 2013 we commemorated the 750th. anniversary of the “Battle of Largs”, the last Viking battle fought on Scottish soil in the year 1263. We visit “The Pencil” monument, built to commemorate the battle and stop at a panoramic viewpoint. There is time for some local shopping in Largs if you wish before crossing to the island of Cumbrae and the town of Millport.

 ISLE OF CUMBRAE

A 10 minute ferry trip from Largs takes us to the Island of great Cumbrae and the town of Millport. A haven for wildlife, there are over 120 species of birds and seals which can be spotted in the bay. Millport boasts safe beaches for kids and offers a variety of indoor and outdoor amusements as well as Europe’s smallest Cathedral, The Cathedral of the Isles. We spend some time at the Museum of the Cumbraes in Garrison House, then take a drive around the island which allows us to see the natural rock formations known as “Lion Rock” and “Crocodile Rock” both of which are used in the novel “Hollow Earth” written by John and Carol E. Barrowman.

PORTENCROSS CASTLE

Legend has it that Portencross Castle was the last resting place of the great kings of Scotland. They lay in state at the castle for a short time prior to being transported to the island of Iona for burial.
