Outlander Book Locations Tour: Culloden, the Standing Stones and the Clan Lands…
Spend the morning learning about Clan Fraser and MacKenzie. Explore the land they walked, the homes they lived in, the towns they frequented and the places they were buried…

Wardlaw Mausoleum – reputed to be the final resting place of Simon ‘The Fox’ Fraser, the 11th Lord Lovat and Jamie Fraser’s grandfather in Outlander. We will visit the underground crypt that was said to contain his headless body, smuggled here after his execution at the Tower of London. His head remained in London. The Mausoleum was built as a burial place and shrine to the Clan Fraser.

Beauly Priory – a beautiful 13th Century ruin where Claire met Maisri, the Lovat’s Seer, and where she would also spend quiet time walking alone. The town of Beauly originates back to the early 13th century when the Priory was first built. An 800-year-old Elm Tree stands at the entrance to the graveyard which is thought to be the oldest Elm Tree in Europe. The village was named Beauly after Mary Queen of Scots exclaimed ‘C’est un beau lieu’, which is French for ‘what a beautiful place’ when she visited in the 16th century.

Outlander-inspired Landscape and the ‘real’ Lallybroch (not the filming location) – visit the Laird’s House for the youngest Son of the Chief of the Mackenzie Clan in the 17th/18th Century. The House was built in 1637 and retains a great deal of history within its walls. If Lallybroch existed, this beautiful mansion would be it.

Castle Leod – The ‘real’ Castle Leoch, Seat of the Clan MacKenzie (not the filming location) – home of the Earl of Cromartie, Chief of the Clan MacKenzie. Steeped in history, this castle is still lived in by the family today. Ideally, your tour will bring you here during one of the castle’s open days which will allow you to tour inside. If the castle is not open to the public, we can take a leisurely walk up the tree-lined avenue to see this it from the outside.

Spend the afternoon in Culloden, walking the path of the Jacobites…

Culloden House – at the time of the Jacobite uprising in 1745-46, Bonnie Prince Charlie used Culloden House as his lodging and battle headquarters prior to the fateful battle on Culloden Moor. As such, Culloden House featured heavily in Outlander towards the end of Series two and of course in the novels.

Jacobite Weapons Demonstration – Andrew will show you a range of Jacobite weapons and demonstrate how they were used in battle: The Targe, Lochaber Axe, Basket Hilt Broadsword, Flintlock Musket, Flintlock Pistol, Powder Horn, Dirk and the Sgian Dubh. You’ll also see how a Jacobite puts his kilt on (just like Jamie’s) from a long length of plaid. The kilt is called a féileadh-mór.

Clava Cairns – The Standing Stones – This is an exceptionally well-preserved group of prehistoric burial cairns and standing stones which were built around 4000 years ago. They include the famous ‘split stone’. It’s these stones near Culloden Battlefield, where the sounds of battle would have been heard on that fateful day, just as they were Jamie and Claire said their goodbyes before he went into battle and she came back through the stone.

Culloden Battlefield – where the last pitched battle was fought on British soil. Enjoy a guided tour of the battlefield with a Jacobite (Andrew) and see the gravestone for the Frasers who tragically fell on 16 April 1746 along with many other Clansmen. After that, tour the indoor museum and gift shop at your leisure.

Why are our tours so different?

Your Tour Guide wears the full Jacobite Kilt: Called a féileadh-mór, this is the style of kilt worn by the Jacobites during the 1745 uprising, and by Jamie in Outlander.

Professional Photographs of your Tour: Throughout the tour we will take professional quality photographs of the group in each location (only with your permission of course), and we will e-mail you a complete photographic record of your Outlander experience within two weeks.

Two very passionate Tour Guides: We are Andrew and Diane Nicholson, husband and wife team, and we are passionate about this beautiful country, its remarkable history, and sharing it with you.

Just six guests per tour: You’ll be touring in our brand new air-conditioned Mercedes Vito Tourer Minibus, which will seat us in the front and up to six tour guests very comfortably. A small group with two tour guides ensures that everyone’s needs are met throughout the day. We will take very good care of you.
