HIGHLAND BOUNDARY FAULT - OUR FAULT: A coastal walk to the north of the town, taking in Cowie Village before climbing the cliff path, around the golf course, past Den of Cowie and down to Skatie Shore and the Highland Boundary Fault itself.
The Highland Boundary Fault, from where we get our company name, is a major geological feature of Scotland. Formed over 400 million years ago by the power of colliding continents it separates the older rocks of the Grampian Mountains from the younger rocks of the Midland Valley. As we walk you will notice the big variations in the colours and textures of rocks we pass on the way.
We’ll pass Cowie Village, climb up the cliff path and hunt for Cowie Castle before skirting around the golf course and on down to Skatie Shore, a very popular yet secluded sandy beach where we can spend time hunting for the elusive ‘groatie’ (cowrie shell) or simply watch the waves and take in the sounds around us. Climbing up Garron Point, we’ll stand on top of the High Boundary Fault itself and take in the views back towards Stonehaven across layers of jagged, sheared rocks.
A scramble up the steep grassy bank will lead us onto the golf course where we’ll make our way back along the edge. If the tide and light conditions are right the faultline can be seen as it crosses Craigeven Bay. A stop at St Mary’s Chapel and Graveyard then on past the Old Battery will bring us back to Cowie and our return to the town square.
Distance is approx 4 miles and will take approx 2.5 - 3 hours, there are some narrow sections of coastal path and a short, steep, grassy bank to scramble up. Shorter/easier version available - contact us for details and to arrange.
