Sea kayaking is growing in popularity as a lovely relaxing way to enjoy the sea and coastlines and get some mild exercise at the same time. You will get to see and paddle different locations each day, sleeping and eating on board the MV Monadhliath. Combine this with spotting some great Scottish wildlife like whales, dolphins, eagles and seals whilst on board and this could be your best Scottish holiday ever!
September 10th to September 13th 2021
Our first morning will see us meeting in the town of Fort William. Pick up is available at either the train station or a hotel/B&B of your choice. We will then head up to the small village of Arisaig, a mecca for sea kayakers. Here your bags will be collected by the ship’s crew and shuttled out to the MV Monadhliath for you. We ourselves will spend our time preparing our sea kayaks and spending valuable time in this well-sheltered bay, getting used to our sea kayaks and how to handle them. We will then head out, cutting through islands that guard the entrance to this sheltered loch, exploring the rich wildlife and finally connecting with our waiting boat and your floating home from home for the next three nights.
Loch Nevis will be our destination and its remote shorelines will be our playground today. This remote loch with its small village (housing Britain's remotest pub!) and rich cultural history is only matched by its breath-taking scenery. If there is anywhere in Scotland that can make you feel small, then this is the place. The mountains will tower above us all day, and as we travel along the loch’s shoreline you will very quickly lose yourself in the remoteness of this very special place.
Today will see us exploring Loch Hourn. This remote sea loch slowly cuts its way inland and with the Isle of Skye and the Cuillins as our backdrop, we will again paddle into the wilderness. There are small clusters of islands that shelter a rich and diverse range of wildlife, and the hills that will surround us host a range of birds including sea eagles and golden eagles. All of these areas we will explore from our sea kayaks. At the far end of the loch is the even remoter Loch Beag and if the tide is right, we will get the chance to slip through the narrows and truly lose ourselves.
Our final day will see us head back down the coast to Arisaig. We will have a bit more time yet still so this will give us the opportunity to explore the rich and vibrant area of islands that are scattered along this coastline. We will be leaving the boat and kayaking from here back to Arisaig. Your bags will be shuttled to the mainland by the ship’s crew, leaving you time to relax on your final day's paddle. There will be a maze of tiny channels that only our sea kayaks can slip through, and with some gentle paddle strokes we will be immersed in the local area’s wildlife hot spots for one final morning. Once we land, our transport will be waiting for us and you will be shuttled back to Fort William.
