Celebrate the inspirational work of Patrick Geddes, the early Scots environmentalist who coined the phrase 'Think global, act local'. Rediscover inspiring gardens created a century ago in the Old Town slums, and enjoy modern community gardens.
Following the popularity of Hidden Gardens of the Royal Mile, this walking tour explores another part of Edinburgh's Old Town, celebrating the inspirational work of Patrick Geddes, the early Scots environmentalist who coined the phrase 'Think global, act local'.
First, the tour offers you an introduction to Patrick Geddes's ideas about the environment and Old Town regeneration. Then, rediscover inspiring Geddes gardens created over a century ago in the Old Town slums, and enjoy modern community gardening projects, including a visit to the normally-locked Johnston Terrace Wildlife Garden and a thriving community garden on West Port, still called 'The Geddes Garden'.
Note: We can offer a variation of The Patrick Geddes Garden Tour called Children's Gardens in the Dark Places of the Old Town. This longer walk celebrates the Free Kindergarten Gardens as well as the Geddes Gardens.
