Ardmaddy Estate sits in a quiet, gentle corner of Argyll and has five well equipped and comfortable holiday cottages which all have secluded locations and fantastic views. Easy access for walking, cycling, boating. Pets and families welcome.
Ardmaddy Estate sits in a quiet, gentle corner of Argyll on the west coast of Scotland and the first things that strike you on arrival are the beauty, serenity and peace. Whilst within half an hour of the harbour town of Oban, and only three hours from Glasgow, once there, you feel as though you are in a different time and space to the rest of the world.
Its quiet tranquillity and the utter peace soothe the soul and rest the senses and its open spaces and magnificent views free the mind. The estate offers an opportunity to leave the every day world behind and is a perfect base for walking, cycling, seakayaking, exploring, fishing, bird watching, touring, or simply just having a rest. Surrounded by woodland, hills, moors and sea, Ardmaddy is also a haven for wildlife - from eagles soaring above the hills, to skylarks singing their hearts out, from deer grazing on the hillsides, to otters hunting by the shore - there is so much here for you to see and experience.
We have five holiday cottages here on the estate and all of them have secluded locations with enclosed gardens and fantastic views either over nearby islands and out to sea or over surrounding countryside. Furnished and equipped for your comfort and convenience they are intended to be a home from home - indeed many people come back year after year to "their" cottage. Facilities include washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, fridge, freezer, TV, video, DVD, CD player, telephone microwave, garden furniture, BBQ and private parking. The cottages are all also fully heated and have open log fires – wonderful to cosy up to at the end of the day, those cooler evenings for those days you just want to sit and read.
Also available are cot, highchair, use of a hard tennis court, a shared games room, boat hire and easy walking access. We usually have some fresh seasonal vegetables for sale which are grown in the Castle Gardens, and if you don't feel like cooking, we have a selection of gorgeous freezer meals available!
Pets are welcome in all of our cottages.
CADDLETON FARMHOUSE is the largest of our houses, and being just one hundred metres or so from the shore, it has a glorious location and tremendous views across the bay and towards the Islands of Seil and Mull to the West, and Scarba and the Garvellachs to the south. With its thick stone walls and quiet calm, it truly has a feel of the old farmhouse that it is.
The ground floor has a large carport with dry, level access to a large games room/cloakroom further leading to a spacious living room with well-equipped farmhouse-style kitchen, 4-oven Aga, low level ceramic hob, combination microwave, dining and sitting areas and open fire. From there you have access to a large conservatory overlooking the garden and the sea, a twin bedroom with adjacent shower room and toilet (suitable for disabled) and a large sitting room with open fire, a piano and stairs to first floor. There is also a larder, utility room, drying room and cloakroom. The oil fired central heating supplies the whole house.
Upstairs there is a double bedroom with 5ft bed and en-suite bathroom with over-bath shower, bidet and toilet. A second double bedroom, again with 5ft bed, has an en-suite shower room with toilet. There is a second twin bedroom, and an adjacent bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet. Two steps lead from the landing to a very spacious attic-style bedroom with four full-size single beds - a fantastic room for children!
Outside is a large, enclosed garden and ample parking space for several cars. Through the gate leads you down to the shore, or up on to the hill tracks. Caddleton is an amazing venue for a family gathering or for friends to get together all year round.
THE STABLES, as the name suggests, was the original stable block for nearby Caddleton farmhouse and this sensitive conversion now provides comfortable and spacious accommodation for up to 10 people. Pine has been used extensively throughout the house giving traditional character and a feeling of warmth, and the house has full oi-fired central heating.
The accommodation is all on one floor - the entrance hall leads into a spacious and open plan living area comprising a modern and comprehensively equipped kitchen, dining area and large sitting room where there is an open fire and patio doors overlooking the sea.
There are four bedrooms; a double with 5ft bed, two twin rooms and a room with full-size bunks and an additional single bed (2ft, 6in). All the rooms are furnished in pine and have fitted cupboards. There is a shower room with toilet, and a bathroom with shower over bath, and toilet with handrails.
Stables is just a hundred metres or so from the shore and the view from the main rooms is westward over Ardmaddy Bay and beyond. Sunsets are a speciality here! The garden is enclosed and spacious and through the gate you have access to easy walking along the shore road, or a little more strenuous up on to the hill tracks
Upstairs the former granary forms The Stables’ own games room with a small snooker table, table tennis and darts.
CRAIGUILLEAN has the most glorious location on the water's edge at the end of a half mile car-track. It looks west and north over to the island of Seil, and south to the islands of Luing, Shuna and Scarba. It has its own jetty and mooring so it's a great place to launch a boat or kayak and a great place to look out for otters and visiting dolphins or even the occasional whale.
This stone built single storey cottage was originally a ferryman's cottage, but has been modernised and extended to provide spacious and comfortable accommodation for up to 10 people.
There are steps leading up to the entrance hall and then steps again into a large kitchen/dining room which forms the central part of the house. At the north end are two bedrooms, one twin and one bunk room with additional single bed, a bathroom with shower over the bath, and a utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer. At the south end are a double bedroom, with 5ft bed and ensuite bathroom (also with shower) and a large comfortable lounge with open fire and windows looking both south and west.
The garden is enclosed, and from there you can explore the shoreline, nip up the hill at the back, or back towards the Castle and beyond. Craiguillean is a magical place with endless opportunities to watch out for birds and wildlife. And the sunsets can be spectacular.
FOREST COTTAGE has a southerly aspect and is a light and spacious single-storey cottage nestling just below the castle. and overlooks a grazing field leading to Ardmaddy Bay and beyond to offshore islands. With full oil-fired central heating and daytime sun, Forest is bright and warm!
The large entrance porch leads to a shower room with toilet, and into a spacious modern kitchen with dining room. The kitchen is fully equipped complete with dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer.
The comfy lounge looks south and has an open fire for that cosy feel. The double bedroom, which also looks south, has a 5ft bed and built in cupboards. There is also a twin room and a second twin room (one 2ft 6in bed). as well as the main bathroom which has a shower over the bath.
There is also a small sun porch overlooking the sea and with access to the garden which is fully enclosed and is a super place to sit on a sunny day. From here you can easily walk up into the woods, down to the shore, or up on to the moors. At certain times of year you will find geese grazing along with the sheep in the adjoining field.
THE LODGE is the smallest of our cottages and is ideal for couples or small families. Originally the gate house on the private road to the castle, this comfortable property has been refurbished to Visit Scotland ‘4 Star’ standard, whilst retaining much of its traditional charm and character. There are steps to the entrance which leads into a small but well equipped kitchen and through into a cosy sitting room with dining area and open fire.
There are two bedrooms, one twin and one double, the latter having a 5ft bed and a wash-hand basin. Both bedrooms have built in wardrobe units. The bathroom has over-bath shower and toilet.
Outside, the garden is enclosed, secluded and with a well-kept area leading into more natural woodland with a banking leading down to the river below. Being south-facing the garden is quite a suntrap on a sunny afternoon, and being close to woodland, it is a good place to look for visiting red squirrels! Beyond are grazing fields, woods and hills and has easy access to some wonderful walking.
