Discover the breath taking scenery and wildlife that's typical of South West Scotland, with a stay at RSPB Mersehead Reserve. Stroll along the nature trails and use the viewing hides to explore at your own pace. Spring is particularly magical, when the wet meadows fill with lapwings and skylarks, not to mention butterflies and wild flowers. You might also see a roe deer. And in the autumn, thousands of barnacle and pink-footed geese start to arrive for the winter, creating a not-to-be-missed spectacle.
This pair of cosy semi-detached cottages are located in the heart of this renowned reserve which is a Visit Scotland 4 star wildlife experience, famous for its waterfowl. There are plentiful opportunities to explore the local area including the historic Sweetheart Abbey at nearby New Abbey, Caerlaverock Castle with its unusual triangular floor plan and Moat Brae in Dumfries, where J M Barrie wrote Peter Pan. Leisure pursuits in the area include plentiful golfing opportunities with the Southerness Links Championship course and many other 18 hole and 9 hole golf courses available nearby. The Forestry Commission 7Stanes Mountain Bike Trails are located throughout the region at Dalbeattie Forest and also in Dumfries at both Mabie & Ae Forests, a little further afield are the trails in the Galloway Forest Park (Britain's first designated Dark Sky Park). There are plethoras of walking opportunities including beach, cliff top, forest and for those who seek something more strenuous, hill walks. Course and sea fishing are readily available throughout the area.

'Our second stay here and we have hardly left the reserve, just enjoyed the walks, the hide and being nice and cosy in the gales! Some glorious days too and a walk under the stars on a clear night is magical. Colvend Store had everything we needed and the near hide had a phone signal! Cottage lovely and clean and we'll be back next year! Mr and Mrs Hemming, February 2016
